You build the thing over a weekend. It works. You show someone, they say it's cool, and you feel the whole project sitting one small push away from done.
Then nothing happens. Three months later, the repo has not been touched. This is where a lot of AI side projects end, and it is rarely because someone hit a technical wall. The prototype stage kills projects because the work that comes after a working demo looks nothing like the work that produced it.
You Are the Only Person Who Has Ever Used It
The working demo is a starting line that looks like a finish line. That single misread is behind most abandoned projects. What stalls these builds is structural, not technical. You are working alone with no correction loop, against a scope that keeps expanding, on work that stopped being fun around the time you started handling API errors. So do three things. Cut the scope until done is a sentence you can write. Build a twenty-case eval set so progress is measurable. Show it to other builders before it feels ready. Together those are the difference between a folder of prototypes and something people use.

Building alone with no external user and no fixed definition of done. Without either one, nothing ever tells the builder whether to keep going, so eventually they stop.
Only if the current version is already shipped and a specific limitation is blocking real users. Otherwise you are resetting your own progress and calling it an upgrade.
Yes, at a small scale. Twenty saved input and output pairs is enough to tell you whether a prompt change helped or hurt. Without them you are relying on memory, which is generous about yesterday's version.
Think in scope, not weeks. A single-input, single-output tool is a few weekends of work. If yours needs longer than that, the scope is too wide and should be cut before you write a timeline.
Not necessarily. A model upgrade is worth considering when the existing model has a specific limitation affecting your users or requirements. Otherwise, constantly rebuilding can delay shipping the existing version.
A combination of unclear scope, limited external feedback, and the lack of a defined finish line can make an AI project difficult to complete. Keeping the first version narrow can make shipping more achievable.
