I have always been very close to my grandmother since the day I was born. It was she who taught me how to read and write long before I started attending school. However, with old age, she started having difficulty walking and talking, and within a few years, she was advised bed rest by the doctor. Despite being a jolly and playful lady, it was hard for me and my family to spend the last few months of her life in a critical condition. I was 12 years old when she passed away. While grieving her loss, I happened to find solace in books, and one book which left a huge impact on me was 'Florence Nightingale: The Angel of the Crimea'. The book not only helped me understand the life and sufferings of Florence Nightingale, but also instilled in me the inspiration to be like her. Better known as the 'Lady with the Lamp', Florence Nightingale, for me, is a true example of how one can dedicate their own life towards the betterment of society, irrespective of their own well-being. It was then that I made up my mind to grow and be a fierce leader and source of inspiration for the masses, just like her. As I grew up, I started working at Akal Old Age Home, which specialises in dementia care. Despite being a full-time student, I take pride in being a regular volunteer over there, owing to which I gained knowledge about elderly patient care. I believe that my work background has instilled empathy, listening and communication skills in me, which are essential in managing dementia patients in tough situations. In order to fulfil my goal of becoming a registered nurse for the elderly, specialising in dementia care, I have decided to earn a specialised diploma in nursing for dementia care.

Throughout my academics, I have always been an exemplary student in almost every aspect of learning. This hardworking nature has been the reason I was able to complete my secondary education in the medical field at ATS Valley School, Chandigarh. Being a regular book reader, I happened to start the first book reading club in my school and have been its head for almost 7 years. Apart from being a hardworking and disciplined student, I also developed the quality of being empathetic towards my fellow classmates and friends, which is an integral quality of being a nurse. I imbibed the values of being compassionate, selfless, and empathetic towards others in my school's animal rescue club. At the tender age of 10, I became the group leader, where I, along with my team members, rescued and rehabilitated stray dogs, cats, and birds. As I grew up, this love of mine for serving others translated into becoming a nurse for the elderly. For the same, I worked at Akal Old Age Home, Chandigarh, as a part-time caretaker from the age of 14. During my time there, I bonded with a lot of dementia patients and took care of their basic needs, such as bedding, food, and medicines, and also engaged them in sports and other healthy activities. These cumulative experiences made me realise that working for the elderly is an extremely rewarding job that cannot be measured just in terms of money. It was then that I decided to pursue a career in caring for dementia patients and elderly people.

A diploma of nursing in dementia, with its comprehensive knowledge and practical application of the same, will provide me with a full-rounded understanding of elderly care. It will further help me maintain a better support system, create a better routine for daily care, and understand how to communicate with patients appropriately. To have a strong foothold in my career path, after exploring various colleges throughout the globe, I decided to enrol in a diploma of nursing course in Australia from the Australian College of Nursing. For my undergraduate studies, I pursued a BSc in Nursing from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, which I successfully completed with 90% marks in 2023.
